personal statement

At university I wish to continue studying my passion for graphic design. This is the best course for me to pursue a career for in the future. With this choice I believe my ambitions will be achieved by continuing my education to the highest level possible. Whilst at university I would like to learn more about using materials and print, photography and image manipulation. I think this will help give me opportunities to further my knowledge, helping to me understand what kind of artist I am.

Most of my life I have been fascinated by all verities of art and design direction, be it either, interactive design, way finding, photo montage, adobe software, print, promotional advertising and product design. my preferred personal direction that I wish to focus on would have to be communications: For instance, guerrilla and ambient advertising. From an early age I have been fascinated by promotional campaigns, how they execute their ideas, I also find interesting is how campaigns can relate to peoples religions, emotions, especially the psychology of color and typography.

I have been focusing on a graphic design career for the past four years and still adamant this is the right course for me. by successfully completing a BTEC national diploma (level 3) in art and design and obtaining a grade ‘C’ at GCSE in art, shows that I have been interested in art and design for many years. Now currently studying a foundation degree in the same subject; I have been so passionate and enjoying every minute of understanding client briefs and myself experimenting so I can become a successful designer.
I have found this course so far to be an amazing experience and beneficial, primarily to the opportunity of work with real life clients such as Mercedes Benz. The brief was asked of me was to help promote their new branch, which was opening in Manchester and being shown on their vehicles. The second life brief was a competition for an artist known as Anish Kapoor. The project was to create the promotional work, the art direction for the event, which was being held at the Manchester art gallery. Successfully I won the competition. Great experience because it gave me a chance to interact and to understand how to work from a real brief.

In my spare time I enjoy educating my knowledge as a designer by visiting exhibitions and art gallery’s also urban design stores. Whilst taking these trips I tend to find myself examining the execution of the work and what they are trying to say through their work. I look at all verities of work with an open mind and try to understand and explore the art directions. Also in my spare time I attended extra curricular activates with an Adobe authorized training center, concentrating on Photoshop and illustration. This benefited me greatly with my course and my independent work. The time spent learning all the software’s techniques, helped me to work on my time management and how to use the software correctly to my advantage. Other achieving moments are being a junior designer for a established company in Manchester called ‘Astra sign’ whilst working for this company I worked on projects for J.D Sports, The Metro link, Clintons cards, the Manchester Andale and Manchester city f.c. this was great working experience giving me a positive mindset to peruse my dream of becoming a designer. The other benefits whilst working as a junior designer was working with major high profile clients, this helped me to improve my organizational skill, communication skill and time management, helping me understand the pre press side of the company, type, pantones and layout. I challenged myself with a large project a swell for a nightclub in Manchester known as ‘Barcode’ I was asked to design the corporate logo the signage (internally and externally) for company. Due to my recognition I was approached by the promotion staff to work with them with their design team to promote and design more logos, posters/flyers campaigns, banners and tear drops to help promote the nights the club was hosting.

My foundation degree I am studying has enabled me to be more confident with myself. Pushing my ideas forward. Using my time to be freer to experiment and explore my ideas to my best potential. What I have learnt from education and work experience I feel that studying at a degree level is the next step/goal and would be a dream come true.
